What is a VPN and why do we need it?

A virtual private network (VPN) is an Internet security service that creates an encrypted connection between user devices and one or more servers. VPNs securely connect a user to the company's internal network. You need the VPN to connect to the office server while working from home.

Note: OpenVPN can only be accessed through privileged accounts.

How to install, run, connect, and disconnect OpenVPN

  1. Go to the OpenVPN website: https://mccorp.openvpn.com/ and click "Sign In with SSO."
  2. Sign in with your privileged account username (e.g. John Doe → jdoe-a@mccorp.com) and password. If you don't have a privileged account, use your regular account (first initial + last name, e.g. jdoe@mccorp.com).
  3. Once logged in, click "Windows" (unless using a different OS). The installer downloads automatically to your Downloads folder.
  4. Run the downloaded file to begin installation.
  5. Click "Next" through the install prompts. Click "Yes" when prompted to allow changes to your PC.
  6. The OpenVPN application will open after install. Enter the URL https://mccorp.openvpn.com/ and click "Next."
  7. Sign in again with your privileged account and create a profile in OpenVPN.
  8. Select the region nearest you and click "Continue." Allow the prompt to open the OpenVPN application.
  9. Toggle the connection switch ON to connect (OFF to disconnect).
  10. To use OpenVPN afterward, click the OpenVPN icon in the taskbar.
